Derby No Match For Maher

Sorry for the lack of updates but I have been busy.

The season has finally come to an end last weekend. Below is a quick summary from Round 10 onwards.

Things weren’t going to get any easier as we took on ladder leader Bidyadanga.

After a competitive first half Bidgy showed their class in the 2nd half and ran out 91 point victors. When we used the ball well we had our moments of outplaying the Emu’s but turnovers killed us.

Grant Murray battled hard on former GWS recruit Elijah Stephens. Glen Dearle and Shae Butler ran all day in the middle and gave it their all.

Round 11 saw us take on the fast running Looma. We were very competitive all day but Looma made us pay for some poor skill errors. Our pressure was good but we couldn’t sustain it for long enough periods.

Looma eventually kicking away in the final term to run out 53 point winners.

Damo Crispin again presented all day. Shae Butler and Ash Spowart worked hard in the middle.

Round 12 we took on Saints who were making a late run for the finals.

Again we were more than competitive but frustratingly made crucial turnovers at bad times and saints made us pay on the scoreboard.

We lost by 56 points but we were way more competitive than that.

Clint Bell booted 3 goals and got reported (we got him and his brother Ash Spowart off at the tribunal) . Shae Butler was prominent again on the ball along with Glen Dearle. Chaz Gardiner again solid in defence.

Round 13 we took on Bulls in the Sam Ellies Shield game. Bulls were sitting 3nd so really needed a big percentage boost to jump to 2nd.

Again we had a fair crack but again we missed easy targets and Bulls made us pay. Actually lucky for us they were inaccurate (12.20) in front of goal.

After an OK first quarter we weren’t in the contest after that. Bulls running out 77 point winners. It is now tied 5 wins apiece for the shield. Maybe next year.

Grant Murray held the Bulls full forward to just 1 goal in a great effort. Young (16 year old ) Darcy Thorn played his best game for the season and held his own against the bigger Bulls bodies. Shae Butler and Ash Spowart were also solid contributors.

Last Friday night was Round 14 and the final match of the season. We took on Derby in the battle of the dreaded wooden spoon. Both teams were on just 1 win for the season. Derby had brought a strong team down and it was a tight contest in the first 2 quarters. Towns led by 3 points at quarter time kicking 4 goals straight. The second quarter we were inaccurate managing 1.4 but we went into half time with a slender 4 point lead. We spoke about the bigger ground would tire Derby and we needed to expose them out wide and we did this to perfection in the third term. A 4 goal to 2 term had us in front by 15 points at ¾ time. The final term the team played great team footy and we were always in control after kicking the opening 2 goals of the quarter enabling us to score our second win of the season, avoid the wooden spoon and finally get to sing the song again. Sung it loud too (those who could remember the words) . We won by 26 points.

Shae Butler was again outstanding and capped off a very consistent year. Sean Gregory was brilliant down back and Damo Crispin booted 3 goals up forward and provided a great marking target around the ground. Skipper Rhonen Maher played his first game in 6 weeks semi recovering from an ankle injury – he managed 6 goals from full forward. Coach Daz was a very relieved and happy man to get the win.

It has been a long season but we have shown signs of improvement. We really need to gain a few quality recruits to provide some polish to our play.

We have our presentation night on August 20. Should be a close count this year. Sean Gregory started brilliantly but missed 5 matches when he broke his hand. Shae Butler was consistent all year and should poll well. Damo Crispin always seems to poll well and Ash Spowart last years B&F winner will be up there.

Footy trip away likely to be back at Barred Creek again in early September.
